Movies to Cry to
Are you ever in the mood to cry? During isolation crying is exciting (at least for me, which might be weird) and I’m sometimes in the mood to have a good cry. These are some of the movies I watch when crying is needed.
1. Grave of the Fireflies
Dead Poets Society might make you shed a few tears, but Grave of the Fireflies will make you bawl your eyes out. Trust me. Grave of the Fireflies is the heartbreaking story of two young children trying to survive WW2. The 14 year old older brother is tasked with taking care of his little sister when his mother dies in a fatal bombing. The movie illustrates the effect of war especially on children. Grave of the Fireflies moved me and taught me that war’s effect is not only on the battlefield.
2. Dead Poets Society
If you haven’t seen Dead Poets Society I don’t know what you’re doing. From the outside it looks like a generic coming of age story but if you look closely, it is a story that presents the reality of life and the weight of the expectations of parents. The movie follows a new teacher (Robin Williams) who teaches students to look at poetry a different way, while showcasing the hardship of the students’ lives. The ending of Dead Poets society will no doubt leave you in tears and will leave you wanting to hug the main characters in sorrow.
3. Alias Grace
Alias Grace is a short Netflix Original series with 6 episodes in total that you can binge watch in one day. No doubt Alias Grace is a sad tragedy but I’m not sure if those tears were my hormones acting up and being way too sensitive or a result of the story. The series is based on a novel by Margaret Atwood, and it is about an Irish Immigrant who becomes a servant in 1840s and is convicted of the murder of her housekeeper and becomes a main gossip topic. One minute you think she did it one minute you think she did not. Grace lives through hardship and witnesses a traumatizing event.
4. Miracle in Cell No. 7
This is a movie I have not yet watched, how could I recommend it without watching it? Trust me, the trailer alone left me in tears. Miracle in Cell No. 7 is a Turkish film available on Netflix. The story follows a daughter who suffers from a cognitive disorder and his daughter. Things start going sideways as the father is wrongfully acused or murder. Even those who rarely cry during movies bawled during this one.
Have a good cry!
