Meaning in lyrics: P.A.T.T. by Against the Current
Against the Current is a pop-rock group made up of three members; Daniel Gow (lead guitarist), William Ferri (drums), and Chrissy Costanza (lead vocalist). I’ve listened to the group throughout my adolescence, so my love for them is very much nostalgia-driven.
In 2018, they released their album “Past Lives”, an album I loved for the lyrics and themes. The title itself holds meaning, and I loved being able to interpret what this could mean. Actions may speak more than words, but not always, and at least not to me. As an art form, music is a complex composition that interweaves all kinds of different artistic mediums into one, which I find amazing. This is not limited to any genre of music, but particularly with music tracks including vocals, there is this invocation from the vocalist, and depending on your tastes, how you feel listening to the song, this can be really powerful, and you do feel connected whether you realize it or not. That is how I feel listening to “P.A.T.T.”, written and sung by Chrissy Costanza.
The meaning behind these lyrics is not implicit. There is not much to interpret per se, and it is simple. The chorus is repeated many times throughout the song:
(Chorus)
If love is blind
Why do we got to be pretty all the time?
(Girls, girls)
If love is blind
Why do we got to be pretty all the time?
(Girls, girls)
It works that this is repeated often, as well as the overall repetition in the song, because it helps to build how strong the song is with its inherent simplicity. The lyrics plainly state the expectations of girls;
(First Verse)
You tell me I never smile
You tell me I talk too much
It feels like I'm under fire
It feels like I'm not enough
I won't let you bring me down
Gotta let all of me out
